President and CEO
Philip M. Gattone, M.Ed., is the president and chief executive officer of the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF). He was named president in February 2024.
Gattone is a seasoned leader dedicated to amplifying the impact of nonprofit organizations through his distinctive blend of leadership and strategic insight. As the previous president & CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation, Gattone orchestrated unprecedented growth, expanding the organization’s reach and influence. Through innovative partnerships and streamlined operations, he spearheaded record-breaking community engagement and financial performance. Under his stewardship, annual revenues surged from $10 million in 2012 to over $25 million in 2020, marking a significant milestone in the Foundation’s trajectory. Gattone’s collaborative approach also forged alliances with key stakeholders, bolstering the Foundation’s standing within the national and global epilepsy community.
Prior to his transformative role at the Epilepsy Foundation, Gattone elevated community impact and served as a senior executive in local, regional, national, and global nonprofit organizations and healthcare companies. His experiences provide a rare perspective and deep understanding of the unique needs facing nonprofit and healthcare company leaders.
Gattone earned his bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Bradley University and his master’s degree in education from National Louis University in Chicago. He resides in North Carolina with his wife, Jill, where they remain steadfast in their commitment to making a difference in the epilepsy and bleeding disorders community and beyond.

Advancement
Beth Whitehouse is the senior vice president of advancement for NBDF, responsible for creating, executing, and leading a comprehensive national development strategy and stakeholder relations program that enhances corporate and individual giving, expands philanthropic and industry support and diversifies funding sources to advance the mission of NBDF. With more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and management, Beth leverages her strategic leadership to drive transformative impact on fundraising and stakeholder engagement efforts.

Kristi Harvey-Simi is the vice president of chapter services, where she oversees NBDF’s efforts provide nonprofit expertise and guidance to its chapter network. In addition, Kristi also plans, organizes, and implements training programs for chapter leaders at NBDF’s Chapter Leadership Seminar (CLS) and the chapter track at the annual Bleeding Disorders Conference. Kristi holds a BA in psychology and social work from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR.

Maria Salas-Pilla brings more than 21 years of expertise in planning large-scale conferences and events to her role as vice president of conference & travel services. Maria oversees all aspects of event planning for more than eight NBDF conferences annually, including managing housing, sponsorships, and virtual and hybrid events. Prior to joining NBDF, she worked at the World Federation of Hemophilia, where she successfully organized over 28 conferences across more than 24 countries, gaining experience planning events and mastering logistics in diverse cultural settings worldwide. She holds undergraduate and juris doctor degrees in Civil Law from Venezuela and a diploma in marketing and business tourism from the Toronto School of Business. She also holds certifications as a Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC) and Digital Event Strategist (DES).

Education
Kate Nammacher is the senior vice president of education at NBDF. Since joining the foundation in 2015, she has worked to empower people affected by inheritable blood and bleeding disorders to build a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and support which lead to shared decision-making, fewer complications, and higher quality of life. Kate has been in the nonprofit field for more than 25 years, focusing on health and well-being. Kate’s previous experience includes positions at the Guttmacher Institute, Community Healthcare Network, the Ad Council, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She received an MPH in maternal and child health from the University of California at Berkeley.

Adeli Lopez, vice president of human resources for NBDF, is a seasoned human resources professional with over a decade of experience, specializing in organizational development, employee relations, compensation and benefits, and DEI initiatives.
Adeli is recognized for her ability to foster inclusive, equitable work environments and enhance employee engagement. Through her leadership, she has successfully developed and implemented programs that have increased staff retention, improved performance management processes, and integrated diversity and inclusion into workforce strategies.
With a passion for building cultures where employees feel valued and empowered, Adeli has overseen national HR operations, managed compensation structures, and played a key role in leadership transitions, all while maintaining a focus on improving business outcomes. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and HR management from the City University of New York, along with certifications from SHRM, HRCI, as well DEI certifications from and Cornell University and the University of South Florida.

Public Policy & Access
Nathan Schaefer, MSW, is the senior vice president of public policy and access for the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation. He has worked for the organization since 2016. Nathan directs federal policy and advocacy initiatives, including legislation and regulatory reform. He also oversees the state government relations team, which helps NBDF’s chapter network identify and execute state and local policy priorities. He also oversees the organization’s payer initiatives, including the Comprehensive Care Sustainability Collaborative (CCSC). Nathan is the current chair of the American Plasma Users Coalition (APLUS) and serves on the blood and product safety committee of the World Federation of Hemophilia.
Prior to joining NBDF, Nathan served as executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, and director of public policy at Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the nation’s oldest HIV service organization. He received a Master of Social Work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

Maria E. Santaella, PhD(c), MSN, RN-BC, CPHON®, serves as senior vice president of research strategy at the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, where she leads the organization’s research agenda and drives collaboration among lived experience experts (LEEs), researchers, and other key stakeholders. She oversees key national initiatives, including the Bleeding Disorders Research Collaborative, the research grants program, and Community Voices in Research (CVR), a community-driven registry that captures longitudinal lived experiences. She also provides strategic leadership to the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC), its working groups, and related initiatives. A dual board-certified nurse with more than 30 years of clinical and research expertise, Maria is a published author recognized for advancing innovation, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by inheritable bleeding disorders. In 2026, she was appointed editor-in-chief for the journal Bleeding Disorders: Care & Practice.
