Philip M. Gattone, M.Ed., is the president and chief executive officer of the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF). He was named president in February 2024.

Gattone is a seasoned leader dedicated to amplifying the impact of nonprofit organizations through his distinctive blend of leadership and strategic insight. As the previous president & CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation, Gattone orchestrated unprecedented growth, expanding the organization’s reach and influence. Through innovative partnerships and streamlined operations, he spearheaded record-breaking community engagement and financial performance. Under his stewardship, annual revenues surged from $10 million in 2012 to over $25 million in 2020, marking a significant milestone in the Foundation’s trajectory. Gattone’s collaborative approach also forged alliances with key stakeholders, bolstering the Foundation’s standing within the national and global epilepsy community.

Prior to his transformative role at the Epilepsy Foundation, Gattone elevated community impact and served as a senior executive in local, regional, national, and global nonprofit organizations and healthcare companies. His experiences provide a rare perspective and deep understanding of the unique needs facing nonprofit and healthcare company leaders.

Gattone earned his bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Bradley University and his master’s degree in education from National Louis University in Chicago. He resides in North Carolina with his wife, Jill, where they remain steadfast in their commitment to making a difference in the epilepsy and bleeding disorders community and beyond.

With more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and management, Beth leverages her strategic leadership to drive transformative impact on fundraising and stakeholder engagement efforts.

Angela Sommer

Tania Hanscom

Tania Hanscom is the director of development for NBDF, where she focuses on building relationships with donors. She oversees lead donor portfolio growth and stewardship, drives fundraising strategy, and develops and executes donor pipeline strategies. Prior to joining NBDF, she worked for 20 years in development at United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, most recently as associate director of development. She is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives, and that drives her dedication to building strong relationships, leading successful campaigns, and helping grow support for NBDF.

Tyler Hoffman is the donor engagement manager at National Bleeding Disorders Foundation where he manages the donor database, supports business processes and helps the development department. With a background in database management and skilled in Raiser’s Edge, Bloomerang, Virtuous and DonorPerfect; he ensures donor data accuracy, generates reports, and streamlines processes to strengthen donor relationships and advance organizational goals. Over the course of his career, Tyler has helped with data migration, implementation, reporting systems, automating complex data challenges and ensuring data integrity.

Kristi Harvey-Simi is the vice president of chapter services, where she oversees NBDF’s efforts provide nonprofit expertise and guidance to its chapter network. In addition, Kristi also plans, organizes, and implements training programs for chapter leaders at NBDF’s Chapter Leadership Seminar (CLS) and the chapter track at the annual Bleeding Disorders Conference. Kristi holds a BA in psychology and social work from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR.

Mary Lou Warner

Mary Lou Warner is the manager of national chapter operations, a position she has held since 2022. Prior to this, she served the bleeding disorders community in Iowa as the executive director of Hemophilia of Iowa, now known as Bleeding Disorders of the Heartland. Before coming to the bleeding disorders community, Mary Lou had served in various leadership roles at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa as well as serving as a national trainer for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Maria Salas-Pilla brings more than 21 years of expertise in planning large-scale conferences and events to her role as vice president of conference & travel services. Maria oversees all aspects of event planning for more than eight NBDF conferences annually, including managing housing, sponsorships, and virtual and hybrid events. Prior to joining NBDF, she worked at the World Federation of Hemophilia, where she successfully organized over 28 conferences across more than 24 countries, gaining experience planning events and mastering logistics in diverse cultural settings worldwide. She holds undergraduate and juris doctor degrees in Civil Law from Venezuela and a diploma in marketing and business tourism from the Toronto School of Business. She also holds certifications as a Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC) and Digital Event Strategist (DES).

Ciarra de Leon is a conference and travel services specialist II for the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation. Kate Nammacher is the senior vice president of education at NBDF. Since joining the foundation in 2015, she has worked to empower people affected by inheritable blood and bleeding disorders to build a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and support which lead to shared decision-making, fewer complications, and higher quality of life. Kate has been in the nonprofit field for more than 25 years, focusing on health and well-being. Kate’s previous experience includes positions at the Guttmacher Institute, Community Healthcare Network, the Ad Council, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She received an MPH in maternal and child health from the University of California at Berkeley.

Heather Hicks

Heather Hicks is a manager of education at the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, where she manages the NYLI program for young adults, fostering the development of leadership and advocacy skills among the next generation. Additionally, she oversees the creation of a series of 3D videos about the clotting cascade and how different bleeding disorder treatments work in the body. She is also actively involved in planning consumer sessions for the Bleeding Disorders Conference, creating valuable educational opportunities for the community.
Heather holds a B.S. in molecular and microbiology and a Master of Public Health from Florida International University. Heather leverages her extensive experience and expertise to create meaningful and empowering learning experiences for those affected by bleeding disorders, helping to improve their quality of life and well-being.

Florence Carlowicz

Florence Carolwicz is the manager of accounting for NBDF. Adeli Lopez, vice president of human resources for NBDF, is a seasoned human resources professional with over a decade of experience, specializing in organizational development, employee relations, compensation and benefits, and DEI initiatives.

Adeli is recognized for her ability to foster inclusive, equitable work environments and enhance employee engagement. Jacob Murdock

Jacob Murdock is the senior executive director of the Nevada Chapter of NBDF, where he brings his experience in volunteer management, outreach, youth programming, and education to the role. In his previous experience, Jacob coordinated service learning and leadership development at University of Las Vegas, managed an AmeriCorps VISTA program at United Way of Southern Nevada, and managed community and volunteer partnerships at the Mob Museum. Jacob is also a dedicated volunteer serving with ADL, ACLU, Camp Anytown, Q3 Student Partners, The Young Non-Profit Professional Network (YNPN), and Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA). Kyra Calbero

Kyra Calbero is the executive director of the Hawaii Chapter of the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, where she oversees all operations, activities, and programs. After becoming diagnosed with a bleeding disorder as a teenager, she soon became involved with her local chapter and joined NBDF’s National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI), where she gained valuable leadership and advocacy skills. Upon her graduation from Pacific University in June of 2019 with a degree in public health and a minor in disability studies, she worked in Forest Grove, OR as a skills trainer at a school serving teens with severe behavioral disabilities. In July 2020, she returned home to Hawai’i to join the National Hemophilia Foundation Hawai’i Chapter as its program manager. She has been serving as the chapter’s executive director since 2025.

Teri F Willey

Teri joined the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation in 2022 to spearhead the launch and management of the National Bleeding Disorders Venture Fund, LLC, Pathway to Cures. Focused on equity investments in companies developing therapies for inheritable blood diseases, Teri has more than 35 years of experience in commercializing early-stage research results. Previously, she served as the founding managing director of IU Ventures’ Indiana Philanthropic Venture Fund. Her career includes senior executive roles in business development at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, as well as founding chief executive of Cambridge Enterprise Ltd in Cambridge, England, and co-founder of ARCH Development Partners, a Midwest venture fund. Teri's expertise lies in starting, reorganizing, and leading technology transfer programs, and launching new early-stage funds for science-based ventures. She has advised policymakers, universities, and companies, served as president of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), and held a fellowship at Christ’s College, Cambridge, England.

Tim Brent, MBA, has been involved in the bleeding disorders community since 2004. He serves as venture principal for Pathway to Cures, carrying out venture investment work. Tim provides contracts oversight, sourcing and evaluating opportunities for investments, developing business and investment cases, drafting and managing the investment transactions with external counsel, and managing post-deal relationships with biotech companies. His previous experience includes clinic and pharmacy operations management and national accounts contracting for a national specialty pharmaceutical distributor.  Tim holds a Master of Business Administration from Eastern Illinois University.

Nathan Schaefer, MSW, is the senior vice president of public policy and access for the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation. He has worked for the organization since 2016. Nathan directs federal policy and advocacy initiatives, including legislation and regulatory reform. He also oversees the state government relations team, which helps NBDF’s chapter network identify and execute state and local policy priorities. He also oversees the organization’s payer initiatives, including the Comprehensive Care Sustainability Collaborative (CCSC). Nathan is the current chair of the American Plasma Users Coalition (APLUS) and serves on the blood and product safety committee of the World Federation of Hemophilia.

Prior to joining NBDF, Nathan served as executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, and director of public policy at Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the nation’s oldest HIV service organization. He received a Master of Social Work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

Bill Robie

Bill Robie is the senior director of state government relations for the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation and is responsible for overseeing NBDF’s state policy work. Bill works on key issues affecting access to health care for the bleeding disorders community including patient out of pocket expenses, step therapy and other utilization management practices, Medicaid prescription drug management, patient protections in the Affordable Care Act, and pharmacy benefit manager reform. Bill has worked in government relations for more than twenty years and has experience at the local, state, and national levels.

Matthew Delaney

Matt Delaney joined NBDF in 2022 as government relations manager, where he assists NBDF chapters in advocacy and policy, and contributes to the foundation’s federal and international work on blood and product safety and supply. As a person who lives with von Willebrand disease (VWD), Matt brings his personal expertise as a community advocate for himself and his family to the role. Community advocacy led Matt to pursue a career in public service, and he gained valuable advocacy experience through NBDF’s National Youth Leadership Program. After graduating from the State University of New York at New Paltz, Matt served as a legislative aide in the New York State Senate, and in public policy representing the behavioral health and social services sector in New York state. He is currently pursuing his master’s in public administration and policy at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy in Albany, New York. In 2026, Matt was named to City & State New York’s 2026 Albany 40 Under 40, an annual list recognizing rising stars in New York State government, politics, and public service.

Maria E. Santaella, PhD(c), MSN, RN-BC, CPHON®, serves as senior vice president of research strategy at the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, where she leads the organization’s research agenda and drives collaboration among lived experience experts (LEEs), researchers, and other key stakeholders. She oversees key national initiatives, including the Bleeding Disorders Research Collaborative, the research grants program, and Community Voices in Research (CVR), a community-driven registry that captures longitudinal lived experiences. She also provides strategic leadership to the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC), its working groups, and related initiatives. A dual board-certified nurse with more than 30 years of clinical and research expertise, Maria is a published author recognized for advancing innovation, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by inheritable bleeding disorders. In 2026, she was appointed editor-in-chief for the journal Bleeding Disorders: Care & Practice.

Halli Benasutti is the director of research grants at NBDF, where she oversees the foundation’s research grant programs, including the Excellence Fellowships, the Judith Graham Pool Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, and the Sanofi-sponsored Career Development Awards. She also focuses on grant funding to support research initiatives, including the Bleeding Disorders Research Collaborative and Community Voices in Research. Matthew Hartnett, BS, MPH, is the community network research manager for the NBDF, where he focuses on Community Voices in Research (CVR), a community-powered registry for the bleeding disorders community. Matt obtained his undergraduate degree in human physiology from Boston University and a Master of Public Health from George Washington University. Matt is committed to bridging the gap between research and the lived experiences of the bleeding disorders community.

Samantha Carlson

Samantha Carlson is the director of research at the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, where she engages and supports diverse individuals and groups in ways that are meaningful, inclusive, and accessible, with the goal of making research relatable to all. She oversees the patient and caregiver lived experience expert (LEE) advisory panels, LEE Research Advisory Council, impact reporting, and community partnerships. She has been part of the inheritable blood and bleeding disorder community since 2009, serving as a clinical social worker and director of social services through her local HTC for ten years. She is a speaker for various chapters and organizations on aging, psychosocial care with serious illnesses, volunteer management, pain management, and person-centered care. Prior to joining NBDF in 2021, she served as the area agency on aging director and the COVID-19 pandemic response incident command planning section chief for Kalamazoo County. Samantha is a licensed Master of Social Work, practicing in southwest Michigan since 1998, with a past certification in interdisciplinary care, neurological injuries, oncology, palliative care, and mixed methods research.
