The National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF) is proud to be an official charity of the United Airlines New York City Half Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon. The New York City Full and Half Marathons takes you through the streets of New York City for a one-of-a-kind race experience.

These events are an amazing opportunity to increase awareness of inheritable bleeding disorders, as well as raise much-needed funds to support NBDF’s mission. When you commit to join NBDF’s Red Tie Runners team, you not only get a coveted, guaranteed spot in the race, but you become an advocate and champion for families living with an inheritable bleeding disorder. Your participation will mean so much to our community

NBDF will have guaranteed (5) spots in both the United Airlines New York City Half Marathon in the Spring, and TCS New York City Marathon in the Fall. Please see the event listings to find the current Full or Half Marathon details!

What does ‘guaranteed entry’ mean?

“Guaranteed Entry” means that NBDF will have a spot for you to run in either the TCS New York City Marathon or United Airlines New York City Half Marathon.

How do I become a charity runner for NBDF?

It’s easy! Complete the online runner’s application and we’ll take care of the rest. Please see the event listings to find the current Full or Half Marathon details!

Do you already have a guaranteed entry?

You’re still welcome to join Team NBDF! Runners with existing bibs are asked to raise a minimum of $500. Team members with existing bibs will have access to online training, receive a runner t-shirt, and will be invited to the team brunch. Please use the same link to submit your application.

What happens after the application is submitted?

NBDF will send you a runner’s contract. Once signed, you will receive an “Invitation Code” to officially register for the race through the New York Road Runners website. Please note, all applications must officially register withing two (2) weeks of receiving their invitation code. Runners who do not register within 2 weeks risk losing their spot on the Team NBDF.

How do I start fundraising?

Once you register for the race, we will send you a link to our team fundraising page on the DonorDrive platform for you to set-up your personal fundraising page. Once you set-up your page with a personal story and photo, you are all set to begin raising funds! In your personal story, include WHY you are doing this? Sometimes it’s very personal. You might be running in honor or in memory of a loved one. Your contacts are more likely to donate if they see a personal heartfelt message on your fundraising page.

What is the minimum amount I need to raise?

The minimum fundraising amount for the United Airline New York City Half Marathon is $1,500.

The minimum fundraising amount for the TCS New York City Marathon is $3,500.

Is there a fee to register for the New York City Full or Half Marathon race registration fee?

Yes, the New York Road Runners assigns a registration fee to all races. It is a separate platform from NBDF’s Red Tie Runners registration platform.

What fundraising resources does NBDF provide to help me reach my fundraising goal?

We are always here to help and support your fundraising efforts. All Red Tie Runners will receive a copy of our Fundraising Toolkit with sample donation request letters, suggested social posts, fundraising tips and more. We will help you every step of the way so that you can reach your fundraising goal before the fundraising deadline.

What if someone wants to donate via check rather than credit card on my fundraising page?

The donor can make out a check to “National Bleeding Disorders Foundation” and in the memo section of the check; they should mention your name and the race. We will then manually add that donation amount to your fundraising page. Please include the names of your donors and donation amounts, so that we can include this information when we add the donations to your page. They can either mail it directly to NBDF or you can mail it to us at:

National Bleeding Disorders Foundation
Attn: Advancement
P. O. BOX 25368
NEW YORK, NY 10087-5368

What if someone gives me cash? What do I do?

If a donor gives you cash, you can either write a check to NBDF for that amount and mail the check to NBDF to the address listed above. Or you can use your own credit card to donate that amount to your page. We don’t recommend mailing cash through the postal system.

Are corporate matching gifts counted toward my goal?

Yes! Many companies match employees' charitable contributions. Please check with your employer to see if your company has this program and ask your donors if their employers match gifts. Many companies issue matching gift checks quarterly or semi-annually, so please just make sure to communicate with the NBDF staff on the matching gift.

What happens if I don’t reach my fundraising goal by the deadline?

All fundraising commitments must be remitted to the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation by the Tuesday following the race. Any fundraising commitment outstanding after that date will be charged to your credit card. If the event is cancelled for any reason, no amount of the funds received by NBDF will be returnable to you or the donor. A valid credit card in your name and valid through June must be provided upon acceptance into our team (please carefully read the runner contract).

Can I continue to raise funds after the deadline?

Absolutely! Your fundraising page will remain open through December, and we will gladly accept donations by check or via our website.

Will NBDF provide any type of training/coaching?

Yes! All Red Tie Runners will receive a personalized 12-week online training plan based on your fitness level and running experience through a NYRR virtual trainer.

What happens if I need to cancel after signing up?

If you receive a guaranteed entry through NBDF, you may not defer or reinstate your entry at any point. Donations raised and received by our office will not be refunded and you are expected to still meet the minimum fundraising commitment, regardless of your participation in the race.

However, if you are unable to participate due to injury, you may cancel your entry. Upon cancellation, you can receive a guaranteed entry into the following year’s race, provided the minimum fundraising requirement for the cancelled race is complete. Red Tie Runners will be responsible for rescheduling race registration and fees. NBDF will not be responsible for any rescheduled race registration fees.

Does NBDF supply transportation to the start of the race?

No. All Red Tie Runners will take transportation supplied by New York Road Runners not the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation. Be sure to read all emails leading up to the race as there will be important details and deadlines.
