The National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF) is pleased to announce the appointment of three new distinguished members to its Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2025. Additionally, we are delighted to announce the re-election of Susan Hartmann for another term.
New Board Members
Dr. Richard Metz brings both medical expertise and personal connection to the bleeding disorders community. As a father of a son with Hemophilia A and a recently retired internist with 45 years of medical practice, Dr. Metz offers a unique perspective that bridges clinical understanding with lived experience. His extensive leadership background includes 26 years on the Hemophilia Foundation of Southern California Board, including three terms as president, and service on the National Hemophilia Foundation Board from 2003-2007, where he played a crucial role as interim President during a critical transition period. Dr. Metz's contributions have been recognized with both the Inspiration Award and the Loras Goedkin Award from NHF.
Tamsen Bhachech joins the board with over two decades of legal expertise, currently serving as Deputy General Counsel of Regulatory Compliance for a global technology company. Her diverse background includes roles at Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, alongside experience in international conflict resolution and non-profit leadership. As an accomplished author of over thirty romantic suspense novels, Bhachech brings creative thinking and strategic insight to the board.
Paul Empey contributes extensive executive leadership experience as the President and CEO of Precision BioLogic Inc., a leading hemostasis diagnostics and research company. With more than 40 years in senior positions, Empey's expertise in leadership development and action-focused management style will be invaluable to the foundation. His credentials include certifications in Leadership Development, Disciplines of Execution, and Professional Coaching, complemented by degrees in Business, Electromechanical Engineering, and Marine Engineering.
Re-elected Board Member
Susan Hartmann continues her dedicated service to the board, bringing her extensive experience in community development and advocacy. As Program Director at Enterprise Community Partners, she combines her expertise in public sector consulting with passionate advocacy for the bleeding disorders community. Hartmann's personal connection to the community through her husband, who has severe hemophilia A, and her significant contributions to the National Bleeding Disorders Conference make her continued service particularly valuable.
These appointments reflect NBDF's commitment to maintaining diverse leadership with deep understanding of both the medical and personal aspects of bleeding disorders, while ensuring strong organizational governance through legal, business, and community development expertise.
