Roberts, MD, Associate Medical Director of the Bleeding and Clotting Disorders Institute of Peoria, Illinois and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Because von Willebrand disease (VWD) presents in many healthcare settings, it is important for clinicians in primary care to better recognize and respond to possible cases of this bleeding disorder and refer patients to hematologists for appropriate workup and treatment. This case study emphasizes the importance of collaborative care of the VWD patient over his or her lifetime and outlines the respective roles of primary care and hematology specialists.
This case study presentation is intended for physician assistants, primary care physicians, hematologists, and nurse practitioners with an interest in VWD.
Learning Objectives
After completing the case activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of VWD and its underlying pathophysiology
- Perform family and personal history, physical examination, and appropriate laboratory testing upon suspicion of VWD and refer patients with relevant histories and exams to a hematologist
- Customize VWD care plans by considering indications, mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of treatment choices, and provide appropriate follow-up and care coordination
- Counsel and educate patients with VWD on managing risk and sustaining health and quality of life
