Marion Koerper, MD, was visibilty moved as she accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) during the Award Ceremony at NHF's Bleeding Disorders Conference on October 5, 2019, in Anaheim, CA. The award recognizes a 50-year career in pediatric hematology and as a strong advocate for the bleeding disorders community during the HIV/AIDS era.

Dr. Koerper thanked her colleagues at University of California San Francisco Medical Center (UCSF), where she served as director of the first hemophilia treatment center at the institution. She also thanked the support of her fellow NHF Medical and Scientifc Advisory Council (MASAC) members. Dr. Koerper was a member of the council for many years and served as vice chair.

NHF presented the Physician of the Year Award to orthopedic surgeon James Luck, MD, of the Orthopaedic Institute for Children in Los Angeles, CA. During his 48-year career, Dr. Luck has changed the lives of countless people with bleeding disorders through orthopedic surgical intervention.

The Murray Thelin Researcher of the Year Award was given to David Scott, PhD. Dr. Scott is an immunologist and professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He was honored for his work on experimental approaches to immune tolerance to factor VIII and on tolerance mechanisms.

The Mary M. Gooley Humanitarian of the Year Award was given to Aleida Stark, RN, of Texas Children's Hospital, for her exceptional work with patients and families, particularly in the area of patient education and readying young people for the transition from pediatric to adult care.

NHF also recognized the efforts of NHF chapters with Chapter of Excellence Awards.To earn a chapter of excellence award, the chapters must work to meet specific standards that guarantee their members are served to the highest standards possible in the following categories: Advocacy and Public Policy, Board Leadership & Governance, Fundraising & Development, NHF Partnership, Programs and Services, and Volunteer Management. In 2019, forty-six chapters achieved a Chapter of Excellence awards in these categories.
