Last month the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) launched “A Nation in Motion,” its new campaign to make people aware of the benefits of orthopaedic surgery. On a new Web site created for the campaign, www.anationinmotion.org, people whose lives were dramatically improved by orthopaedic surgery share their experiences. The stories range from children with scoliosis who can now stand correctly to young adults with various fractures and connective tissue tears who can compete on college sports teams. Older people with joint replacement surgeries relate how they’ve been able to resume dancing, golfing and walking. On the site you can share your own story or try your hand at a new online board game.
“More than one in four Americans have bone or joint health problems, making these health concerns the greatest cause of lost work days in the United States,” said John R. Tongue, MD, president of AAOS. “When orthopaedic surgeons restore mobility and reduce pain, people are able to get back to work and lead independent, productive lives.”
