The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) is pleased to announce that Justin Horbacz of Ocean Township, New Jersey, is the recipient of the 2016 Kevin Child Scholarship.
Horbacz, who has hemophilia A, is currently a freshman at the University of Florida (UF). He is majoring in Health Science at the UF School of Public Health and Health Professions with an ultimate goal of becoming a pediatric hematologist in the future. Horbacz was an honors student at Christian Brothers Academy and a Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Scholar. His goal to attend a good medical school preparatory program was set after successfully completing a Medical Institute Program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Horbacz has received numerous volunteer and community service awards and credits. He was a camp counselor at “Hole-in-the-Wall Gang Camp,” a volunteer at the Jersey Shore Medical Center, and has contributed time and organizational skills to several charities, such as Cure Kids Cancer Foundation and Save One Life. Last year he was the recipient of a “Baxalta Spark Award” for creating positive change in the world. Horbacz also spent four years as a champion varsity swimmer on the leading high school swim team in New Jersey.
This scholarship is named for Kevin Child, who died of AIDS in 1989, shortly before graduating from college. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student with hemophilia who is currently enrolled or about to attend an institution of higher learning. In honor of Kevin’s legacy, the Child family established this scholarship program to provide assistance to other students with hemophilia also striving to attain their own academic and career goals.
